I am Professor for Empirical Social Science Methods with a Focus on Text Analysis at the Department of Communication and currently Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Vienna. Before, I have worked as Associate Professor for Political Communication at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research and the Department of Communication at the University of Amsterdam. serve as deputy scientific director of the Austrian Social Science Data Archive, deputy director of the Vienna Center for Electoral Research and Scientific Board member of the European Social Survey. Currently I am Associate Editor of Journal of Communication. Also, I am member of the Editorial Boards of the International Journal of Public Opinion Research, Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media and of the European Journal of Political Research.
My research interests focus on various aspects of computational communication science with a substantial focus on political communication and migration. I study (social) media portrayals of politics and media effects on political attitudes and behaviours and contribute to methodological advances of content analysis techniques. I have co-authored more than 90 international journal articles and numerous book chapters on issues such as media and European integration, media election campaign and issue coverage, media effects on economic perceptions, immigration attitudes and extreme-right voting and on framing effects.
